What is Pueraria mirifica?
Pueraria mirifica is a Thai herb known for its estrogen-like effects. It is used to ease symptoms of menopause in women.
Clinical Studies Overview
Researchers studied how Pueraria mirifica affects menopausal symptoms. The study had three phases to check its safety and effectiveness.
Phase 1: Symptom Relief and Safety
Women with menopause symptoms took Pueraria mirifica capsules (50 or 100 mg per day) for 6 months. Their symptoms included:
- Irritability
- Fatigue
- Joint and muscle pain
- Vaginal dryness
- Pain during sex
- Low sexual confidence
- Burning urination or incontinence
Results
They used the Modified Greene Climacteric Scale (MGCS) to measure symptoms. Scores above 15 mean estrogen deficiency.
- Average score dropped from 44.1 to:
- 26 at 1 month
- 17 at 3 months
- 11.1 at 6 months
This shows clear improvement with no serious side effects.
Phase 2: Continued Use
Women continued taking 50 or 100 mg per day for another 6 months.
- 50 mg group: Scores dropped from 35.6 to 15.1 after 6 months
- 100 mg group: Scores dropped from 32.6 to 13.6 after 6 months
Hormone levels (estrogen, FSH, LH) stayed stable. This means Pueraria mirifica did not disturb natural hormone balance.
Phase 3: Comparison with Hormone Therapy
This phase compared Pueraria mirifica to standard hormone therapy:
- Group 1: Took 50 mg/day of Pueraria mirifica
- MGCS dropped from 29.0 to 9.9 after 6 months
- Group 2: Took conjugated equine estrogen (EE) + medroxyprogesterone acetate (MPA)
- MGCS dropped from 32.26 to 8.16 after 6 months
Both treatments worked well. Pueraria mirifica showed results similar to hormone replacement therapy (HRT).
Small Study with Dried Powder
Another study gave 200 mg/day of dried Pueraria mirifica powder to 5 postmenopausal women for 4 months. They reported:
- Fewer hot flashes
- Better mood and sleep
- Less dry skin
Conclusion
Studies show Pueraria mirifica has an estrogenic effect. It helps reduce menopausal symptoms naturally and works similarly to hormone therapy.
