Many people know Pueraria mirifica, a Thai herb, for its natural estrogen-like effects. But can it really improve vaginal health in women after menopause? A clinical trial by Jittima Manonai and colleagues explored this question in depth.
Study Design
This was a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study conducted in healthy postmenopausal women aged 45–60. Participants were randomly assigned to receive either 20, 30, or 50 mg of Pueraria mirifica in capsules or a placebo daily for 24 weeks.
Key Findings
- After 24 weeks, 71 women were evaluated. Of these, 51 received Pueraria mirifica and 20 received placebo.
- The Pueraria mirifica group reported a decrease in vaginal dryness symptoms after 12 weeks of treatment.
- The vaginal maturation index (a measure of vaginal cell health) improved significantly. It changed from 46% parabasal, 43% intermediate, and 11% superficial cells at the start to 11% parabasal, 65% intermediate, and 24% superficial cells after treatment.
- There was no significant difference in adverse effects between the Pueraria mirifica and placebo groups.
Conclusion
This study showed that Pueraria mirifica has estrogenic effects on vaginal tissue, helping to:
- Reduce vaginal dryness
- Improve dyspareunia (painful intercourse)
- Reverse signs of vaginal atrophy
- Restore healthy vaginal epithelium
Importantly, no serious side effects were reported during the 24-week trial.
For postmenopausal women experiencing vaginal dryness or discomfort, Pueraria mirifica may be a natural alternative to improve vaginal health. However, as always, consult your doctor before starting any herbal supplement to ensure it is safe and suitable for your condition.
